East Timor's President Released from Hospital

On February 11, 2008 there was an attempted coup in East Timor. In simultaneous attacks, the country’s prime minister and president were attacked by rebel soldiers. The attack on Prime Minister Xanana Gusmão was repelled without major incident. However, the attack on President Jose Ramos-Horta resulted in Ramos-Horts being shot three times and the deaths of three others. Two of those killed were rebel soldiers, including the rebel leader Alexander Reinado, were killed and the third was one of the presidents bodyguards.

Jose Ramos-Horta was released from an Australian hospital and is expected to return to East Timor in several days.
