Kids Everywhere Love the Camera

A few weeks ago I was fortunate enough to visit a very remote part of the world—East Timor. For those that do not know it is between Australia and Indonesia. It is half of the first island you reach going north from Australia.

When we landed in East Timor were in the capital city of Dili, which is on the northern coast. The temperature was about 104 degrees and very humid. After collecting our luggage and taking care of a few things in Dili we started for the mountains. In about two hours the temp went from 104 to about 76 as we went up about 3000 feet in elevation.

Once we arrived in the town we would be working from we started exploring a bit. It didn’t take long for a group of kids to notice we were there and they started gathering. One of the members of the team had a camera and pulled it out to start snapping pictures. A bunch of the kids started to pose and also started doing matial arts-type movements. That explains my strange pose in the picture below.

It seemed that everywhere we went there was a crowd that gathered. The team we were with had a short puppet show prepared, all done with Ikea finger puppets, and they seemed to love it.

I am amazed at the opportunities in East Timor. There is very little in the way of infrastructure in this country and what little there is has been allowed to deteriorate due to lack of resources, interest, and war. I am excited about the kind of impact that LIVEº can have.
